Harry Stack Sullivan was born 1892- 1949 at Norwich, New York  , he is an American psychiatrist. He is the first American who develop a comprehensive personality theory. Sullivan was a child of Irish immigrants and grew up in the then anti Roman- Catholic town of Norwich , New York , it results social isolation which may have inspired his later interest in psychiatry.

He conceptualized personality as an energy system , as he says with energy existing either as tension (potentially for action) or as energy transformations. He divided this tensions into Needs and Anxiety. Needs , it can relate to the general well-being of as person such as mouth and genitals. General needs can be physiological such as , food , shelter , water and air they can be interpersonal  , such as terderness and intimacy,  we can not live without this things. Anxiety contrast of needs, unlike needs which are coonjuctive and call for specific actions to reduce them anxiety is disjunctive and calls for not consistent actions for its relief. A complete absence of anxiety and other tensions is called euphoria. Sullivan used the term dynamism to refer to a typical pattern of behavior. Dynamisms may relate either to specific zones of the body or to tensions. Malojovelence , is a dynamism of evil and hatred , those children who become vicious has much difficulties in giving and receiving tenderness or being intimate to other people.Intimacy is an internal relationship that involves physical and emotional intimacy Intimacy facilitates interpersonal development while decreasing both anxiety and loneliness. Lust contrast to malovelence and intimacy it in a emotion or feeling of intense inside the body , in other words lack of knowledge , the lust for sex and power and requires no other person for
its satisfaction.Self-system is the organization of experiences that acts as a protective mechanism against anxiety.

Sullivan believes that people acquire certain images of self and others throughout the developmental stages and he referred these perceptions as Personifications.First the Bad-mother and Good-mother, it grows out of infants experiences with a nipple that does not satisfy in their hunger needs. All infants experiences the Bad-mother personification  these two personifications combine to form a complex and contrasting image of a real mother.Next one is Me personifications during this stage child acquire three ME personifications first the bad me , which grow from experiences , punishment and disapproval the next is the GOOD ME which results from good experiences , reward and approval.Last is The NOT ME which allows a person to dissociate or selectively inattend the experiences related to anxiety.Eidetic personifications this is the most interesting observations was the people often to create an imaginary traits that they project into others. These personifications has an imaginary playmates , an imaginary friends that children has safe, and tend to have a secure relationship with another person , even though that friend is a imaginary. He distuinguished also the three levels of cognition or the ways of perceiving things Prototaxic,Parataxic, and Syntaxic. The Prototaxic level is the experiences that are possible to put into words or to communicate to others , mosty newborn infants experience this level but adults can also experience too , frequently have preverbal experiences that are momentary & incapable of being communicated.Parataxic level this level can be derived from defense mechanism which current interpersonal relationships are perceived & judged according to a mode reference established by an earlier experience. Syntaxic level this are the experiences that can be accurately communicate to others , children become capable to syntaxic language example "Most normal children will have acquired the syntax of their language by the time they start school." At about 12 to 18 months of age when words are begin this will have the same meaning for them that they do to others.

Sullivan develops the Stages of development it stars from Infancy to Mature Adulthood. First is Infancy birth to age of one , the child begin to process of developing , gratification of needs , they need to feed them by their mother , the baby will cry if he/she is hungry or need to change the diaper.Childhood the ability of child to create sounds or speech , to the appearance of need for others or playmates that is cooperative.Juvenile Era he child develops a need for an intimate relationship with a chum. At this time, children should learn how to compete, to compromise, and to cooperate. The child can help to develop intimacy , how to compete and to compromise to others.Preadolescence this is the crucial stage which earlier mistakes can be corrected through this level , but errors during this level can are nearly possible to overcome in later life. Children who do not learn intimacy during preadolescence have added difficulties relating to potential sexual partners during later stages.Early Adolescence the puberty stage , the lust ism ,which in this level (however) continuous until one has patterned some type of performance which satisfies one’s lust & one’s genital drives.Late Adolescence , forming lasting , intimate relationships ,  it begins when a person is able to feel both intimacy and lust toward the same person.Adulthood , this level is when a person has a stable relationship with a right person & develops a consistent pattern of their future.
